A home office is a great luxury today. The increased density is increasing prices on apartments and houses alike more and more each day determining you to think ten times before purchasing anything, forcing you to outsource as many activities as possible, especially if you live in a small rental that does not give the option to adapt spaciality to your real needs, forcing you to incorporate temporary home office solutions in your home.
If you take a moment to think how much time you spend online today compared to let`s say 7-10 years ago you will be stunned. We spend so much time in front of a screen, permanently engaged into different activities that distract us from the real life . We shop online and we have transferred even our social interactions in the online sphere. The internet gave us mobility on actions and immobility on movement. We do everything at home and we refuse to live the coziness and warmth of our home unless it’s necessary. With these dense and mixed feelings in our minds we are continuing our Temporary Solutions for Renters Design Series with small ingenious creative home offices today. These are temporary solutions that might work directly in your rental or simply inspire and feed your imagination, working as starting points in your improvisation process.
#1 Space-Saving Hideaway Desks
Theoretically in a tall armoire you can accommodate absolutely everything that you need. It gives you enough space to contain a computer, a 11×17 printer, a decently sized monitor, books and office supplies alike. You can also extend the desk surface with a foldable desk part or with a pull-out desk. Nedless to say that this space saving solution is decluttering your composition in a great manner.
If you just use a laptop, certain secretary desks with pull out or foldable options might be the way to go.
The furniture suggestions above have the great advantage of folding when the work is done, de-cluttering your home.
#2 Cleverly Designed Kitchens
It goes without a saying that the kitchen is the social core in our home and it gathers friends and family in a magical manner. If you can use a little cabinet in the kitchen from time to time as a work station why would you sacrifice a dresser or another dedicated desk area? It all comes down to the amount of time spent in front of the PC and its shape. A 11 inch Macbook Air can name every piece of furniture in your home a computer desk while an architect`s rendering unit might have a hard time nestling in tight corners.
#3 Creative Use of a Console
As a rental you might have a hard time finding a proper space for your PC. Most of us have the advantage of using a laptop that has increased mobility. If that is the case you can use a sofa table or console that lacks an intermediate shelf to convert into a mini desk behind your couch along with a pull up chair. This will boost practicality for both the desk and couch saving a lot of space.
#4 Bedroom Sharing Desk
You always have the option to take a little space from your bedroom and convert it into a small office. If you are a homeowner and you have the privilege of owning a guest room you can actually plant the desk there. It is the most unused part of the home and it will benefit the guest as well .
#5 Rethink Your Bookshelves
You can convert and adapt your bookshelves to accommodate a small desk that can be foldable as well. Al you need is a little wall space between two furniture pieces. On the neighboring bookcases you can nestle some office supplies, chargers or memory storage devices that you use frequently.
#6 Closet Desk
A commonly used tactic that you have probably seen before. This is very graphic and tidy at the same time and it`s not sacrificing that much of your storage space. It will be a natural extension for your room that boosts a new function.
#7 Fill a Niche
Maybe you are able to find a little niche free in which you can install a small desk with the permission of your landlord. It is simple and efficient yet hard to find in most apartments.
If you live in a duplex apartment with room- mates you can also nestle a small desk under the stairs or even in a closed balcony.
#8 Tiny Scale Desk
You can find really small desks and complementary equally small chairs in height to make them usable. These can be folded with ease when you are moving and they would do the trick exemplary if you office needs are also tiny.
If you can tuck a small desk in a foyer or hallway go for it.
If your landlord allows it a mounted foldable desk is a very efficient space saving solution.

#9 Dining Table Work Zone
You probably don`t work while the rest of the family is eating breakfast or dinner. You can use the dinner table between meals to wok if that is the case. Notice how in the picture below this functionality has been inserted in the design from the start nestling the drawers for office supplies and the incorporated bookshelves.
#10 One Drawer to Rule Them All
Most of us are bringing the laptop to the breakfast table. Be honest, it happens quite often. Whether it does or it doesn`t happen,a drawer dedicated to the laptop is very useful and it can accommodate sufficient office supplies to have everything at hand when you start unfolding your desk for work.
