A simple luminous loft in Amsterdam redesigned by Bureau Fraai surfaced the internet upon its completion in 2015. The project materialized in Netherlands measures 603 square feet and its radical transformation echoes around the world as a design example.

The previous interior compartmentalization has been eradicated giving birth to an open floor plan that could not allow proper communication in the establishment. The redesign has at its core the design of a wooden ribbon in a light tone. This element defines the apartment as it travels through, shaping essential functions for the inhabitants, allowing it to breathe in the light.

Clutter has perished into the process thanks to the extensive storage now sheltered by the ribbon; light is now present at all times, guarding the ethereal ambiance created.

Loft Amsterdam by Bureau Fraai:

“How to convert a small former social housing apartment in the city centre of Amsterdam into a spacious urban loft? First of all, get rid of all doors, walls and tiny rooms around the core of this small apartment. And then create one solid wooden volume of birch plywood with extended wall cabinets alongside the whole length of the apartment.

By incorporating program like bathroom, toilet, storage and a box-bed all inside the wooden volume the space around the volume can be freely used for other program like living, dining, cooking and all the other pleasures of life.”

The small apartment simply boosts functionality and breathes light, the particular space offered by the roof is also a great advantage in the interior decor, giving the design more volume, sustaining the longitudinal movement now created in the apartment.
