Natural organic materials will remain the foundation stone of design for eternity. Simple, elegant, noble renewable wood cannot be replaced, cannot be substituted in all its greatness, coziness and warmth. A simple craft realized from salvaged form work boards follows in the gallery below, showcasing just how insanely beautiful can a raw wooden board look in a modern, decorative craft. The Detailed Tutorial On How to Make DIY Wooden Box Centerpiece For Your Home will cover the simple process we`ve followed to realize this box.
Pick up the materials and cut the wooden boards
A board measuring 240x12x2 centimeters has been used in this craft, basically one of the few boards left from a small construction site, they were used as form-work boards for an interior staircase. The board chosen has not been used in the actual form-work but one salvaged from the form-board cleaned properly might look even better, beautifully naturalness combined with leftover concrete milk and maybe even small pieces of concrete.
The wooden box centerpiece will be constructed out of two pieces of 90x12x2 centimeters, the long sides, plus two piece measuring 15x12x2 centimeters, the box eardrums.
We`ve used a an electrical saw to cut the wooden boards smoothly and relatively fast, you can use absolutely anything, circular saws, table saw, manual saw, whatever you have at your disposal. Only a few cuts are necessary so we recommend you not to invest into an electrical saw just for this craft.
If you go for a clean cut with the electrical saw do your best to keep it at 90 degrees; if you use a manual saw this is irrelevant as the rustic, natural look will beautifully emphasize the craft.
The 5th and last piece of wood you are going to add to your craft is the box bottom. In our case it measures roughly 85 x 15 x 2. To ensure you have the right dimensions make a small simulation, raise the sides up and measure the interior space. You can also measure the extremetries and place this piece on top of the vertical boards but the extra thickness will be seen in that case; considering the design step that followed, we`ve chose to insert the board in the box.
Ennoble your design with laser engraving or picture transfer
To emphasize the wooden texture we`ve used a modern technique, laser engraving. A template has been realized on the computer and we`ve made a trip to our local design studio, in our case Makers Studio. Using a laser cutter we`ve engraved the beautiful template on the raw piece of wood. You can find the free template, ready for engraving, at the end of the article.
It goes without saying that you can engrave absolutely anything on your box. In our case it was a fall garden centerpiece and as a result, the engraving was autumn themed, you can change the template below directly, it can be edited with ease. If you don`t have a laser cutter in your town you can paint the box, stencil it with hot iron if you have the tools and experience or the simple and easy to realize picture transfer that uses wax paper. It is worth noting that the picture transfer that can be realzed with wax paper cannot be completed on a raw wooden board, you will have to use a sanded, smooth board.
Assemble your engraved wooden box centerpiece
The two long sides placed one along the other showcase the immense beauty of natural wood.
Simple L brackets have been used to ensemble the wooden box. These are two options found in our local hardware store. We`ve purchased four for the sides and four for the bottom. The sides are harder to essemble once everything comes together so do not use brackets with thousands of screws, choose the simpler models.
Keep in mind that we`re working with boards that are far from perfect, that`s why we love them, that`s why we are using them; thee are going to be imperfections and you might have a hard time assembling them. Always do try outs, at every wooden screw used.
The bottom has been chosen with that piece of bark intentionally, it looks extraordinary with it. We`ve installed the L brackets on the short sides, tied to the bottom board at first, placed the sides and tied them together finalizing everything by securing the long sides onto the bottom.
use varnish to enhance your craft
You can use thousands of substances to finish of your centerpiece and we`ve chose to use a light pine varnish to subtly highlight the engraving.
Add beautiful handles for PRACTICALITY
We`ve purchased a set of handles from our local store and we`ve added it on the short sides. This helped us improve both functionality and aesthetic values, now the short sides having a focal point as well.
Start by carefully measuring the distance between your handles holes.
Mark the hole on the piece of wood, center it horizontally as much as possible; in the vertical plane you can position it wherever you like but placing it in the middle or upper half would emphasize its practicality.
Use an electrical drill to pierce the short sides on the designated marks.
Twist your hand weirdly to mount the handler into position and voila, your beautiful wooden centerpiece is ready to beautify your dinner setting.
A burlap sack has been placed in the wooden box before placing the fall harvest. Get creative with colors, fall has plenty to offer in that regard.
Simple natural rustic look in an elegant setting. What do you think?
You can showcase it by your fireplace after dinner throughout fall.
What do you think about this craft? In its final setting, carrying pumpkins, corns, pine-cones, chestnuts, branch slices and candles we consider it simply stunning. We would love to hear your opinion in the comment section below. The craft can definitely be improved by replacing metal brackets with smart wooden joints and furniture wooden spiles; the centerpiece aesthetic values can be improved as well, there is no doubt; how would you do it?
