When we usually hear of DIY architecture, we think of porches, a small swimming pond or a lovely backyard landscaping design. This case however exceeds the normal limits of what determined, passionate people can do to a home and sets new boundaries by showing that you can even built a dream house by yourself, without professional help.
Let’s be honest though. This home is located in Thailand, in a warm climate and a different society. This means that no thermal insulation materials or security features are necessary or present. Nonetheless, this exotic home is nothing short of extraordinary. By all means, it is a perfect dream home not necessarily in term of luxury appliances but through simplicity and attention to details. The most unbelievable thing though is that the construction process took only 6 weeks and cost no more than 9000$. The owner’s name is Steve Areen, a very determined person who saw an opportunity to build something amazing with limited resources. A tough challenge. His friend, Hajjar Gibran, provided the spot and helped with the planning whilst his son-in-law helped with some obvious excellent masonry skills. The construction process was divided in two parts, the domes and general structure of the house and the finishes like painting and all sort of small but expressive touches. In the end, the fact that the execution is flawless is undeniable. The rather difficult to build domes and curved windows were built perfectly and show dedication and hard work. The design itself is to my mind extraordinary; simple, elegant and kind of unusual but familiar at the same time. Probably the best you can achieve with a limited amount of money.
But most powerful effect is on the interior where it creates a rather welcoming, comfortable and intimate atmosphere, perfect for relaxing, just like a dream home should be and feel like. It reminds me though of a Hobbit’s house, just like the one we’ve previously featured on our website: One of a Kind Architecture-The Underground Gateway by Christian Muller Architects in Vals, Swiss . Another factor that justifies this house’s dream home title is the creativity the owner proved when adding small but important features like on-the-house covered social area, the beautifully tiled table, the bamboo-ceramic sink and the wonderful pond. There’s nothing missing really. No extra large TV or stereo could be more attractive than this. It is amazing though how in such a small place he was able to find enough room for all these amenities by making good use of every little corner. Amazing details. I guess DIY architecture will always impress because of its originality. What do you think about it?
