Located in the western side of Mexico City, this typical modern mansion stands out because of its modernist design, combining stylish materials and simple, beautiful shapes.
The first thing that you notice is the way that the upper level seems to float, despite of its rough and heavy appearance. This isn’t of course a new concept in architecture; however, there are few projects that are able to express this idea clearly and noticeably. The effect is even greater especially because the first floor seems to be very massive and the thin black steel columns, well, too thin. The architects were able to create this illusion by using lightweight concrete, which looks the same as normal concrete but puts a lot less stress on the vertical structure. And, just as we’d expect, there are no walls. Only glass ones that surround the room and allow us to see through the house so that the floating effect would be even greater. You should know that, in case you would like a similar house, this design cannot, most likely, be applied to areas with intense seismic activity.
The exterior color pallet combines black, white and shades of grey with the natural green offered by various plants, creating a very minimalistic but rustic image, making House La Punta look very modern and welcoming. The interior is in a close relationship with the exterior and were designed in a way that they work only when put together, separated they are worthless. This adds character to this project and turns it into a very good example of how a site should be approached by a designer. Every glazing has a correspondent in the exterior like a patio or a small waterfront. This can only add value to this modern mansion and especially to its interior which is made much more comfortable and cozy by the presence of a warm, natural view, and not just another concrete wall.
Here are some more details from the architects:
“In the interior, the spaces generated by the scheme, helped have plenty of diversity in the materials applied, as well as their combination. The structural solution is a combination of concrete and steel; because of the distance that are intended to be freed. The result was a plan view free of columns and visually transparent that generates an interaction between the inside and the outside across the existing translucent openings. The interior spaces connect with the exterior spaces and the environment.
The project is a residence that is generated from the broad needs of the client, with an extensive program that was developed and which allowed to make a game of spaces along the project. The program consists of outdoor areas, amenities and recreation, as well as private and service areas.”
Although it is very interesting as a concept and the real thing, this modern home is not all that impressive. But that’s only because it is a normal house, actually meant to be a home for someone. Not that others are not but most do not have the same familiar and cozy appearance, and a modern design at the same time.
